ivf procedure

In an IVF procedure, the partner’s (donor) sperm is used for fertilizing viable eggs. The quality of the developing embryos is evaluated. The embryo develops into a blastocyst and the selection of the healthiest embryo is done, and it gets transferred into the uterus. If the procedure is successful it leads to a healthy baby. However, every IVF cycle is not always successful, and some patients may suffer from multiple IVF failures. Failures are expensive and take an emotional toll on the couple.

What Are Multiple IVF Failures?

If a woman cannot repeatedly conceive three times post the IVF procedures, it is said to be multiple IVF failures. It occurs when a woman undergoes three recent IVF failures with a good-quality embryo. The woman’s age and the embryo stage must be considered when it comes to various IVF failures.

Multiple IVF failures is a term that can be used for describing both situations — a) when a woman is unable to become pregnant and b) in cases when a pregnancy ends in an early miscarriage.

What are the reasons responsible for multiple IVF failures?

There can be multiple factors responsible for IVF failures. Let’s take a look at these factors:

1. Embryo Quality:-

The eggs are not always at fault for multiple IFVs; sometimes, even poor-quality embryos can result in IVF procedure failures.

The embryos are sometimes not implanted correctly after they get transferred into the uterus. This can be due to a defective embryo.

Some embryos can even be defective before being placed in the uterus, leading to IVF failure. To overcome this issue, multiple embryos are used.

2. Autoimmune Disorders:-

An autoimmune disorder occurs when the immunity system attacks healthy tissue causing inflammation and cell death. Type 1 diabetes, Addison’s disease, celiac disease, and lupus are some of the most common autoimmune diseases.

The antibodies found in women with specific autoimmune diseases can prevent embryo implantation and lead to multiple IVF failures.

3. Age of Eggs:-

Usually, embryos from the egg of women in their late 30s or 40s have higher chances of having an abnormal number of chromosomes. To avoid this failure rate in IVF procedures, doctors usually culture multiple eggs to form the embryo, where they can select one that meets the required criteria.

4. Lifestyle:-

Lifestyle choices are also one of the main reasons behind IVF failures. Couples having unhealthy habits can impact the health of their egg or sperm, leading to a defective embryo. Smoking is said to increase the chances of miscarriage.

5. Poor Sperm Quality:-

In case the sperm is of poor quality, it won’t be able to penetrate the egg’s shell, which can result in ineffective fertilization.

How many IVF cycles does an average person require?

At least 3 IVF cycles are required. It also depends on the woman’s age, ovarian reserve, fallopian tubes, and lifestyle choices to determine success and how many processes she will require.

Women under the age of 35 have seen high success in IVF.

What’s the solution to multiple IVF cycles?

It is essential to go to a highly specialized and reputed IVF clinic as they offer quality solutions such as:

  1. Complete evaluation and diagnosis of the patient’s medical history
  2. Tailored tests and plans for patients according to their problems and medical requirements. Tests are done a post and the patient is provided with medications for reducing the possibility of any failure, and other needed precautions are taken too.
