What Is Azoospermia?

Azoospermia is a medical term and refers to a medical condition where the man has no measurable sperms in his semen.
It is male infertility that obstructs a man from getting a woman pregnant.
It is found that 8–10% of men have infertility; there are 1,00,000 males from them, around 8000–10,000 have infertility, and out of 1000 who have infertility is due to Azoospermia.

What are the different types of Azoospermia?

1. Non-Obstructive Azoospermia:

If a man does not produce sperm or produces poor-quality sperm due to a defect in his testicles or any other reason.

a. Pre-testicular Azoospermia:

This happens due to low hormone levels or due to chemotherapy, and despite having normal testicles, you cannot make sperm.

b. Testicular Azoospermia:

When your testicles get damaged due to an infection in the reproductive tract, cancer, orchitis, or other genetic condition, thereby preventing you from producing sperm.

2. Obstructive Azoospermia:

When there is a blockage around the reproductive tract, and despite producing the sperm, it does not reach and mix with the semen liquid, it is known as obstructive azoospermia.

a. Post-testicular Azoospermia:

If the man has a blockage in his tube, vasectomy, or retrograde ejaculation where the semen goes backward into the bladder instead of the penis during ejaculation.

Azoospermia symptoms:

  1. You are unable to conceive despite having regular unprotected sex for years.
If you and your partner have undergone fertility tests, then you need to provide a sample of your semen, and the sperm will be separated from the semen liquid for detailed inspection and will be examined under a high-powered microscope in a laboratory.
  2. Other symptoms of Azoospermia include decreased interest in sexual activity, swelling around the testicles, erectile dysfunctions, and mood swings.

What are the causes of Azoospermia?

  1. Obstructive Azoospermia
  2. Testicular injury or damage
  3. Ejaculatory duct blockages
  4. Cyst development
  5. Infection

Non-obstructive Azoospermia

  1. Genetic condition
  2. Medications
  3. Hormonal Imbalance
  4. Retrograde ejaculation
  5. Varicoceles

Azoospermia Treatment:

The Azoospermia treatment depends on the causes.

1. Obstructive Azoospermia:
It can be treated by performing minor surgery for unblocking the reproductive tract and is a minimally invasive technique.

2. Non-obstructive Azoospermia:
If the man is not producing or produces poor quality sperms, he will be given FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropins) via injection or pills for stimulating the sex glands to produce gametes.

3. Sperm Retrieval:
The sperm can be directly retrieved via testicular sperm extraction procedures (TESA, PESA, PESE) biopsy. These sperms can then be used for IVF (In-vitro fertilization) or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

Azoospermia Prevention:

Azoospermia can be prevented in the following ways:

  1. Protect yourselves from rough games that may damage your testes
  2. Try and avoid radiation exposure
  3. Consult with a doctor before taking any medications
  4. Try and avoid steam baths or activities that include high temperatures
